In 1998, then U.N. secretary-general Kofi Annan hailed a "new century of human rights." "No government has the right to hide behind national sovereignty in order to violate the human rights or fundamental freedoms of its peoples," he proclaimed. Today, when we look at Zimbabwe this seems like an almost naive hope. It is one of the most confusing things. Our African leadership is sadly lacking in goodness, kindness and service to our people.

Today we are all uncertain of what comes tomorrow for that once great state. It will take nothing less than a miracle to change things.

But it can be done. We need to start with a change in the way our people think. If we want more for ourselves we will ask more from our leaders. Here's to tomorrow. We can start again and save ourselves. No one else will do it for us.
